Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
