RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
